Undergraduate Thesis "THE INFLUENCE OF USING DICTATION TECHNIQUE TOWARDS WRITING PERFORMANCE"

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION



A. Background of the Study

Language is a gift from Allah SWT that ones should thank for the benefit for the humankind prosperity as in his saying in the holy qur’an “ And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the variation in your languages and your colours verily in that are Signs for those who know” (QS.Ar-Rum:22). Its mean that, language created in the world in different kind to make people know about the almighty of Allah.
English is an international language that almost all of the countries in the world use it as a first and second language. It is used in various activities such as in education and tourism. In the other word, English is so familiar so that somebody must learn about it. English is compulsory subject which is learned from elementary school until university. Furthermore, in university mastering English language is a must. It will be so much helpful for getting job and Language is a set to give opportunity to students to study in other country.
English has four main skills, such as writing, listening, speaking, and reading. The skills are inter correlated one to another, so that the students must master them. Writing is one of skills that has to be understood by the student as an important part in English learning. The students need to master it to develop their vocabulary. In fact, many students cannot write well, this is caused by their doubt and afraid of making wrong sentences in writing.
Besides of interview with English teacher, this problem found in the eleven class student of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. A lot of the students have been difficulties to write and lazy to learn about writing. And based on the data of pre survey on January 11, 2011 among the eleven class of TKJ and Akuntansi class SMK Muhammadiah 1 Metro in academic year of 2010/2011 shows the level of writing performance among 67 students in 5 are included into excellent category for the score 80-100 (7.5%), 7 students are included into high category for the score 70-79 (10.4%), 5 students are included into fair category for the score 65-69 (7.5%), and 50 students are included into low category for the score 40-64 (74.6%).

Based on all explanation above, its mean that 74.6% of the of eleven class of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 have low ability in writing performance. It is reason the research on writing performance in SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro become interesting. The writer think the cause 74.6% percent student of TKJ and Akutansi class into low category in writing because they seldom practice writing in their life and it can caused by the teacher don’t have technique that can help student interest study English especially in writing. 

It means that writing can be increased by some techniques, one of which technique is dictation. Actually, dictation is not the new technique in education, but dictation is a valuable language learning device and also the suggest ways for using by the teacher in an effective and interesting manner. After the teacher dictate a phrase the student can write down what they hear. In writing by dictation the student can increase their writing ability by listening first, but the purpose of this technique is writing. The student listens to a native speaker and writes down in a book what they hear. Through listening and writing they exercise their mind in a very active way.


B. Problem Identification
Referring to the background above, the problems which have been identified are follows:
1. The students have low ability in writing.
2. The students have difficulties in to write.
3. The teacher doesn’t have interesting technique to teach writing.

C. Problem Limitation
The writer limits the research on the influence or the effect of dictation technique toward writing performance, especially writing paragraph among the eleven class student of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro.
For this attention, of course it will need deep instruction in the part of every variable so that the matter discussion will not spread to the other section and it will limit the discussion.

D. Problem Formulation
Based on the limitation above, the problem in this research can be stated by this formulation “Does dictation influence the students’ writing performance among the eleven class of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in the the academic year 2010/2011?”

E. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
1. Objectives of the Study
The objective of the study is the writer want to know whether there is any influence of dictation technique toward writing performance among the eleven class of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metrro.

2. Benefits of the Study
a. For Student
To inform the student about dictation technique and also to motivate them in writing skill.
b. For the teacher
To inform that writing is important in learning language, so that the teacher teaches writing well and also to give information to the teacher about some techniques in teaching writing.
c. For the headmaster
The research can give inspiration to the headmaster of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro to give inspiration to the other English teacher to teach writing with dictation.
d. For public
The result of the research can be an indicator and input to know how great their care of the teacher and the students in education institution.
